lease rates have normalized to pre-pandemic levels and, across the board, you're
seeing a lot of interest in our metal. "
The final panel of the day was titled " The Commercial Opportunity: A Flight
to Safety or Double Down. " It was moderated by David Swan, chief operating
officer at SMBC Aviation Capital, and featured Anthony Diaz, chairman of Zephyrus
Aviation Capital; Steve Hannahs, managing director and chief executive officer of
Wings Capital Partners; Patrick Kaufer, head of aviation and investment banking at
Deutsche Bank; and Liam Kavanagh, executive vice president and chief commercial
officer at Macquarie AirFinance. The panel mostly discussed takeaways from the
pandemic and how it might affect the way they assess risk in the future. Kaufer was
surprised how little distressed selling he has seen during the pandemic. " Those who
held onto their assets were proven right, " he said. Kavanagh noted that unsecured
risk related to maintenance is being monitored more closely than before, and Diaz
said his company hasn't changed how they assess risk, but it did reinforce what's
been done in the past.
Day Two
In his keynote address that kicked off day two of the conference, Adam Pilarski, Ph.D,
senior vice president of consulting at AVITAS Inc., encouraged more risk-taking to
handle the uncertainty the industry is currently facing. " There will be more chances
