ISTAT Jetrader - Spring 2022 - 41

Concorde. The Aviation Science
and History Program explores how
scientific and technological innovations
in aviation intersect with history,
highlighting the situations that drove
the need for creative problem-solving.
Students in both on-site and online
classes are taken on an adventure
through 20th century advances in
aviation - the curriculum draws on
the aircraft collection, exhibitions,
artifacts and oral histories of former
Intrepid pilots.
Since 2016, ISTAT grants have
supported annual no-fee programs for
500 students from under-resourced
public schools in New York City - in
five years, we have reached 3,000
students with customized programs
for different grade levels that conform
to Next Generation Science Standards
(K-12 science content standards
developed by states to improve science
education for all students).
COVID-19 has not only had a
tremendous impact on the aviation
industry but also on the education
of young individuals. How has this
impacted the Intrepid Museum?
The COVID-19 pandemic has
significantly impacted how we work
with schools and serve students.
The museum ended on-site visits in
mid-March 2020, but by April, we had
launched virtual drop-in education
programs. Over 13,000 K-12 students
and teachers participated in dynamic
live educator-led programs in the
2020-2021 school year, and 87%
of teachers surveyed said they are
using the supplementary materials
provided, such as video access and
extension activities. Many of our daily
programs were aerospace related and
covered topics such as the physics of
flight, aircraft design and the people
who contributed to evolutions in
flight. Additionally, we partnered with
the New York Public Library System
and Camp TV at WNET Education to
provide educator-ready resources,
and are using such platforms at
FlipGrid to reach and engage more
students with the museum's aviation
program content.
Going forward, what innovations/
developments are planned for
the Aviation Science and History
Program?
We continue to build the aircraft
collection. In July, we added a Douglas
F4D Skyray fighter/interceptor aircraft,
which served aboard the Intrepid during
the Cold War. It's now being restored
on-site at the museum. Students get
to see older aircraft being restored and
then compare the technology to today's
aircraft. This hands-on experience
makes our programs dynamic and
compelling for students.
The 99s Museum of
Women Pilots
Tell us a bit about the 99s Museum
of Women Pilots (MWP).
Brave female pilots have been active
in aviation since the first flights,
and women's flying heritage is filled
with dynamic personalities who
have often been overlooked. As Lisa
Students get to see older aircraft being restored and
then compare the technology to today's aircraft. This
hands-on experience makes our programs dynamic and
compelling for students.
