vision; we need €300 million; we'll raise €150 million. " It'll be an all-island initiative,
so every university campus in the country on the island will be involved. This has
powerful symbolism attached to it.
Innovate for Ireland today has government commitment, we're about to hire
a CEO, we've got all of the universities lined up, Avolon committed $10 million,
our first closing will be €50 million, and our first PhD students will be in Irish
universities later this year. Part of our plan is that the Irish government will provide
a 10-year visa to these students - four years to do the PhD and six to work in our
country. We want them to stay here and become part of Ireland's natural fabric.
When you're an island of over 6 million people and you bring 1,400 super bright
people into that country, you're going to move the needle. I want Ireland to be
positioned at the top of the academic food chain.
I have been so lucky in my career, and with that travels a responsibility to make
it easier for those that are coming behind. Innovate for Ireland can become our
sovereign calling card. We can put this island at the center of global sustainable
innovation. This is a legacy project, one that is very close to my heart.
Jetrader: What do you see as the biggest value of ISTAT? What is you fondest
memory of ISTAT over the years?
DS: It's circular that I am receiving this award in San Diego. My fondest memory of
ISTAT, and I have so many, relates to the fact that the very first aircraft I ever bought
and sold, personally, was at an ISTAT gathering in San Diego in the 1990s. It was
an MD-83 on lease to Spanair. I bought the aircraft from Citibank in the morning
and sold it to Finova in the afternoon.
That's the serendipitous aspect of this
humbling recognition.
I loved ISTAT gatherings. Back in
the day, I went to every ISTAT gig. We
were the traders, pitching everybody.
ISTAT, in the 1990s, was tiny relative to
what it is today. I remember going to a
gathering in Saint-Paul de Vence, and I
think it was only 50 of us there. In fact,
Bill Cumberlidge and I jumped behind
the bar after we came back from dinner
to make sure everyone had a drink! The
camaraderie was wonderful, and that's
what I've always enjoyed about ISTAT. I
marvel over the years at just how big it
has become and how important it now
is to our industry. But I love, too, that it
has not lost its core values: colleagues
coming together, networking, sharing
insights and then enjoying a very good
dinner together! Long may it continue.
