he next day was
filled with wellattended
panels and
keynote speeches
that covered several
hotly debated
topics. José Ricardo
Botelho, executive director and CEO of
ALTA, officially opened the conference
and addressed the recovery of Latin
American airlines from the pandemic
and the successful restructuring of
several large airlines.
Peter Cerdá, regional vice president
for the Americas for IATA, shared
the overall macroeconomic trends
and economic outlook of the region,
which recovered much faster than
other regions even though it did not
benefit from government aid. Cerdá
highlighted that the Latin America air
transport industry could double in the
next decade but needs governments
to develop infrastructure to support
the growth.
The first panel, moderated by
Priscilla Branco, gathered Victor Rios,
director at Copa Airlines; Francisco
Raddatz, vice president of fleet
at Avianca; and Juan Echecopar,
executive vice president of corporate
planning and fleet at Aerolineas
Argentina, to discuss airlines. The
panel touched on topics including
current and future demand trends,
potential fear of a global recession,
consolidation and alliances in the
region, and environmental, social, and
governance (ESG) initiatives.
The Cargo Panel was moderated
by Mylène Scholnick, senior manager
of fleet transactions and management
at Amazon, and included operators
(Derry Huff, vice president of aviation
for the Americas at DHL Express;
Luis Sierra, CEO of MAS Cargo; and
Andres Bianchi, CEO of LATAM Cargo)
a lessor (Richard Greener, head of
cargo at AerCap Cargo) and an OEM
(Josh Collingwood, regional director of
air cargo market analysis at Boeing).
Discussions revolved around the
growth of cargo in the region for the
past few years and potential shortterm
softness, the development of the
freighter fleet with different offerings
from narrowbody to widebody and
risks of overcapacity, as well as the
