current state of the market in Latin

America, the growth prospects in the
region, and the airline consolidation
wave. The OEMs concluded with an
update on their respective projects
toward a greener and more sustainable
aviation industry.
The next keynote speaker was
José Montero, chief financial officer
of Copa Airlines. Montero developed
the recovery for Copa, as the airline's
traffic was shut down when the
pandemic hit in 2020 and is now back
to its pre-2019 traffic level as well as
major finance initiatives.
The Finance Panel was moderated
by Paul O'Driscoll, ISTAT Certified
Appraiser at Ishka, and included
Michael Leonard, director of aviation
corporate banking at Citi; Joseph
Putaturo, treasury and insurance
director at Copa Airlines; and Benoist
de Vimal, director and head of aviation
for the Americas at MUFG Bank. In a
lively discussion, the panel delved into
the financing challenges that lay ahead
for several Latin American airlines as
they rebuild their respective balance
sheets post-pandemic. The consensus
view was that insurance or export
credit wrapped financing would be
required for most regional operators
to secure aircraft financing for at least
the coming year, and there would be
an increased weighting of operating
