When I started covering the operating leasing
business in the 1980s, it was really a U.S. and Europeancentric
market. Today, that's very different.
very different environment in terms of technology. However, the one thing that has
not changed is that face-to-face communication is essential to our relationships and
getting deals done. I don't believe you can do a deal over the internet.
The second is the availability of market information. Today, you can sit at
your computer and find huge amounts of information. This is going to be further
enhanced by artificial intelligence. Already in our research area of the company and
in most departments, we are tapping into that. That's a big change. Information
access has assisted developments in capital markets. On the funding side of the
business, both debt and equity capital markets clearly have been helped by this.
When I started covering the operating leasing business in the 1980s, it was
really a U.S. and European-centric market. Today, that's very different; the top five
are spread globally. And if we look at the airline market and the investor markets we
deal with, three of the top five countries by globally GDP are China, Japan and India.
When I think of the challenges, among the hardest were the aftereffects of the
Sept. 11, 2001, attacks, with SARS following 18 months later in Asia. Thinking
back, SARS was just a mini-test for
COVID-19. It was only six weeks
in length in terms of real impact.
However, COVID-19 was the hardest
of all due to the toll it took on airline
traffic and operations, and on our
employees and their families. It
temporarily stopped human interaction.
We value human interaction very
highly, both within the company and
with all of our stakeholders. The
Russian situation should also be
mentioned. The sanctions related to
that have had a big impact on all of the
major players in our industry, which
we're still working our way through.

majority of your career outside
your home country. What initially
attracted you to Asia, and what
has sustained your interest in
