of production rates and the supply chain.
or even exceeded pre-COVID-19 levels. " This is underpinned by four market
fundamentals, " she said. " 1) Essential services: 40% of ATR operators fly essential
services; 2) Domestic traffic is close to pre-COVID-19 levels and 85% of ATR
operations are domestic; 3) ATR aircraft demonstrated it's a perfect tool to restore
traffic and use capacity with single-aisle turboprop; 4) ATR aircraft contribute to
organic growth to the aviation network, which is a good demonstration that the
market is recovering. "
On the topic of pilots, Thomas said the shortage is " a chronic problem that
COVID-19 exacerbated because of retirements, but it goes back to the 1,500 hours
rule, which set a higher bar for pilots. It's not cheap to become a pilot. People
forget that. People say it's a wage issue, but it's not; it's a shortage. "
And on the topic of eVTOLs, Bauer said his company ordered some eVTOLs
recently and they are " firm believers this isn't a matter of if it's going to happen,
but when. Some industry analysts think it's going to be about a $1 trillion market by
2040. This is a massive market. "
Appraisers
Bryson Monteleone, IAP chair and senior advisor for aviation finance advisory
services at PwC Ireland, took the stage to provide an ISTAT Appraisers Program
update. " Our program continues to grow, " he said. " Our appraisers come from and
work for all the key industry stakeholder groups. As a collective group, we rely
on our program colleagues to provide varying lenses on challenging situations. "
Bryson mentioned some 2022 program highlights, including hands-on technical
inspection opportunities coming in
the summer, the redefinition of the
accreditation structure in the autumn
and the possibility of remote exams in
the foreseeable future.
The Appraisers Panel followed,
with John Vitale, president and chief
executive officer of AVITAS, moderating
a panel comprising Mike Yeomans,
director of valuations at IBA Group
Limited; George Dimitroff, head of
valuations at Ascend by Cirium; and
John Mowry, managing director at
Alton Aviation Consultancy. The panel
discussed the Russian invasion of
Ukraine, the aviation cycle and macro
issues related to it, and specific
aircraft values.
During the panel, the audience
was asked how far to the right the
war in Ukraine will push the recovery
curve, and 50% responded a year.
Yeomans agreed, saying " The Ukraine
crisis is pushing risks to the demand
side. Wider implications will be seen
in terms of demand. Operationally,
we're going to see airlines struggling
to circumnavigate the Russian and
Ukrainian airspace. I tend to agree with
the audience that it will be one to two
