market is today - is it a bubble or a
new paradigm? - with most saying it's
just too hard to know at the moment.
Tarpley posited that " the passenger
lower bellies will come back, but I don't
know if they'll come back to the same
53% of all air freighter percentage it
had before the pandemic. There will
need to be more freighters in the next
20 years. "
When asked about the conversion
community, Kehr expressed
disappointment with conversion houses,
saying: " There's a lot of demand, and
they haven't kept all their promises.
There are very few programs that hit
their time slots that are promised. For
us, we're trying to build a business and
satisfy our customers, so we need them
to be realistic. "

737 MAXs and had those delivered prior to the grounding are yearning to put those
aircraft back in the air. There's no shortage of demand from the Chinese operators
that already have those aircraft in their inventory. There are a lot of dynamics
between China and the U.S. right now. The 737 MAX is a small part of that
relationship issue. "
Mueller: " Looking into the crystal ball for the next 30 years, how many
manufacturers will be in the narrowbody sector? "
Udvar-Hazy: " Five. What would shake up the industry is if we had an Apple or
Tesla or someone alien to aircraft come in with new radical digitized super high tech
concepts. That is the wildcard, in my opinion. "
Mueller: " What is the probability of the aviation industry hitting net zero
by 2050? "
Udvar-Hazy: " None and nil. The cost of implementing and achieving those
targets are virtually impossible. Even if you take a low GDP growth in the next 25
years, the demand for air transportation and products will be so great that it'll be
impossible to create enough production and innovation to achieve those targets. "
Freighters
Next on the program was the Freighter Panel, moderated by Pete Seidlitz, president
of Bristol Associates Inc. The panelists were Geoff Kehr, senior vice president of
global air fleet at DHL Express; Wolfgang Schmid, vice president of sales, marketing
and customer support at EFW; Michael Steen, chief commercial officer at Atlas Air
Worldwide and president and chief executive officer of Titan Aviation Holdings; Jens
Steinhagen, director of Boeing converted freighters at Boeing Commercial Services;
and Bill Tarpley, chief executive officer of Mammoth Freighters.

Panel followed, moderated by Kostya
Zolotusky, managing partner at PiiQ
iFLI, and featuring Christopher Chaput,
president of DG Fuels; Bob Lange, senior
vice president and head of business
analysis and market forecast at Airbus;
Michael Norcia, chief executive officer
of PYKA Aircraft; and Michael Sinnett,
vice president and general manager
of product development at Boeing
Commercial Airplanes.
Zolotusky set the stage for the
discussion, announcing that the panel
would focus on the technological
aspects of the topic and that a
separate roundtable lunch held right
after the session, titled " Opportunity
Creation through Carbon Regulation, "
would center on the economics and
regulatory aspects.
Chaput spoke extensively on
sustainable aviation fuels (SAF),
emphasizing that they are the most
immediate way for the aviation industry
to reduce its carbon footprint. " It's
almost impossible to get to net zero
without SAF, " he said. " If you replace
