here was no better way to celebrate
International Women's Day this year than
at the first ISTAT Diversity and Inclusion
(D&I) Breakfast held on day two of ISTAT
Americas in San Diego, which came just
after the Women@ISTAT reception held the
night before.
Sponsored by Ascend by Cirium and moderated by
members of ISTAT's D&I Committee - including Gerry Butler,
Bryson Monteleone, Mary Prettyman and Mylène Scholnick -
and Sigthor Einarsson and Tracey O'Brien from the ISTAT
Foundation, the breakfast was intentionally intimate, with six
tables and about 60 total participants.
ISTAT President Dean Gerber and Vice President
Prettyman opened the breakfast by thanking everyone
for joining and emphasizing how critical it is to build
awareness and take ownership of the role each person can
play in creating change through their everyday behaviors.
As the ISTAT Board has embarked on D&I training and
benchmarking, it is opening the awareness to its members.
PwC consultants, who helped moderate the discussion,
clarified the goal of the morning, which was to explore ways
to be more inclusive in the workplace. Set forth with this
goal, in their small groups, attendees began with a name
exercise as a way to tell their own story. Through names, it

is possible to explore identities and uncover the differences
and challenges inherent within them. There is a lot to a name,
so beginning at this basic level sets a foundation for sharing,
connecting and, most importantly, listening.
After the exercise, participants were instructed to discuss
the following questions:
1. Think of a time when someone made you feel like you
belonged or were welcomed for who you are. What
was the behavior or action they demonstrated that
made you feel that way? With that in mind, what is
something you either currently do, or plan to begin
demonstrating toward others, whether in ISTAT, your
workplace or community, to create a better sense of
inclusion and belonging?
2. What is your company doing for D&I or should be
doing? What programs are effective?
There is a lot to a name, so
beginning at this basic level sets a
foundation for sharing, connecting and,
most importantly, listening.
