Nathaniel Pieper
In a Fireside Chat moderated by Sarah
Aoun, head of global lessor sales at GE
Aerospace, Nathaniel Pieper, CEO of One
World Alliance, shared his insights on
the evolving dynamics within the aviation
industry. Reflecting on the pandemic,
Pieper highlighted how the COVID-19
reopening phase reinforced the critical
importance of airline alliances, as
leveraging each other's networks proved
invaluable during the recovery.
Pieper discussed One World's
strategy, emphasizing the goal of
maintaining a compatible product
across its member airlines. While the
alliance may not induct an ultra-lowcost
carrier, it remains open to the
possibility of including low-cost carriers
in the future.
One of the alliance's long-term
targets is to expand the number of One
World lounges to double digits, driven
by exceptional customer feedback.
Pieper recounted an instance where

Emirates requested to send their
premium customers to a One World
lounge - a request he declined,
affirming that their investments in
lounge quality were on the right track.
Describing his initial weeks as CEO
as a sensory overload, Pieper detailed
his plan to meet with the CEOs of all
13 member airlines worldwide. This
initiative aims to better understand their
needs, prioritize strategic directives and
organize teams to achieve these goals.
Additionally, Pieper observed a
significant shift in demand toward
more premium experiences, extending
beyond aviation to the hotel industry.
The SAF Opportunity
for Asia
In the panel discussion titled " The
SAF Opportunity for Asia, " moderated
by David Swan, chief operations and
sustainability officer at SMBC Aviation
Capital, experts delved into the future
of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) in the
region. The panel featured Takehiro
Kawahara, aviation specialist at
BloombergNEF; Shigeru Komori from
Sumitomo Corporation's commercial
aviation strategic business unit; Ee
Pin Lee, head of commercial for APAC
at Neste; and Jean-Pierre Stainnack,
senior vice president of sales for North
Asia at Airbus.
Shigeru Komori highlighted
Sumitomo's efforts in developing
the Fischer-Trope SAF pathway and
exploring forestry feedstock and solar
energy as sustainable sources. Ee
Pin Lee discussed Neste's significant
investments in Singapore, which began
with a biodiesel refinery and recently
expanded to SAF production. Despite
uncertainties in demand and feedstock
availability, Singapore's regional
connectivity and governmental support
justified these investments.
The discussion underscored that
the Asia-Pacific region lags about a
decade behind the West regarding SAF
policies. However, countries like China
are becoming increasingly aware of
the necessity for SAF and are expected
