Market
The market for standalone used engines
started to develop in 2014 when
Lufthansa phased out its 2006/2007
vintage CRJ700s. They were quickly
purchased by Regional One, which
parted out a number of airframes and
leased the removed engines. Until then,
there had been relatively little trading

in the -8C variant as parent airframes
had, in the most part, remained in
service. As more CRJ700s and E-170s
are retired (Fintech counts 25 to date),
the market has begun to develop, and
pricing points have been established.
Demand is being driven by airlines
wishing to lease short term to cover
MRO shop visit capacity shortfalls,
a theme which is currently affecting
many engine types.
Short-term lease rates can
vary from $40-60,000 per month
(plus reserves) depending upon

length of term, jurisdiction, lessee's
creditworthiness and level of physical
risk assumed. Values have remained
stable over the past few years, though
demand for serviceable used material
and LLPs, which can be installed in
either the -8C or -8E variants, has
firmed up prices considerably over the
past 18 months. With just under 200
E-175s on firm order, and over 300 on
option, demand for -8 thrust and parts
will, notwithstanding the closure of the
CRJ production line, continue for at
least the next 20 years.
