there are many challenges and hurdles. We have R&D work progressing the
combustor technology for direct combustion of hydrogen. If onboard aircraft storage
and distribution logistics are ultimately feasible, we will be ready to support the
technology, but it may take considerable time to bring that to market. "
Rolls-Royce is also using a 50% blend of SAF. " Our engines are already capable
of using a 50% blend of SAF and, by 2023, all Trent engines will be compatible
with 100% SAF, enabling net-zero operation on over 40% of the world's long-haul
aircraft, " Chambard said. Hutter also touched on sustainability. " Sixty-one airlines
have committed to zero CO2 by 2050, " he said. " The direction of consumer demand
is clear, as well. "
Lacorre said CFM parent companies are part of various research programs on
hybrid-electric systems. " Hybrid electric may be the solution for up to regional
aircraft, but another part of the solution is around SAF, " she said. " The issues
there are availability and price, which are correlated. Since SAF are produced in
small quantities, they are quite expensive as of today, so airlines do not buy them,
and producers are reluctant to produce SAF since there is limited market, so it's
a bit of a chicken-and-egg situation. Governments' support are needed to quickstart
the process. We started this year to introduce 10% SAF on LEAP engine tests
performed prior to delivery. We will increase to 35% by 2025. One hundred percent
SAF is already being tested on LEAP engines, both on the ground and in flight. " She
also mentioned hydrogen, saying there are challenges there, but CFM is working to
address them.
