T
he first Boeing 757
was delivered nearly
40 years ago to
Eastern Airlines on
1 January 1983. In
total, 1,050 were
delivered, with the
final unit coming off the assembly line
in 2004. The split was 915 757-200s,
55 757-300s and 80 757-200Fs
(production freighter). Three hundred
eleven 757-200s have been converted
to freighters and, as of September
2022, 246 of these remain in active
service. The fleet is powered by either
Pratt & Whitney PW2000 series engines
or Rolls-Royce RB211s. The RB211
is the preferred engine type, with an
approximate 60% share across the
fleet. The " Flying Pencil " remains a
mainstay of several carriers' fleets, but
particularly cargo carriers.
When Boeing brought the 757 to
market, the aircraft was intended to
serve as a more efficient, longer range
and higher capacity replacement for the
tri-engine 727. The aircraft would also
serve to fill the gap between Boeing's 737
and widebody 767, which was developed
alongside the 757. The aircraft became
a niche offering within the narrowbody
segment. Highlighting this ongoing
status is the lack of a modernized direct
replacement ever being built.
The 757-200 boasts a maximum
range of 4,000 NM and provides
seating for 195 passengers in a typical

dual-class configuration. The 757-300,
which was first delivered in 1999,
provides greater capacity by way of its
stretched fuselage, at the expense of
range (maximum 3,410 NM). It is over
23 feet longer than the 757-200 and
offers seating for 234 passengers in a
typical dual-class configuration.
