One of my favorite Herbisms is to take the
competition seriously, but not ourselves. Another one is
that " if it's conventional, it's not wisdom. "
showing them how much you care. He invested in people and was truly interested
in what was important to them. I think what I will remember most is his sense of
humor and love for people - all people. And we loved him right back!
Jetrader: What have been some of the highlights of your career?
TR: The biggest source of pride for me at work is seeing so many of our young
leaders develop in their careers and become great leaders in their own right. We
have such a talented group of leaders at Southwest, and I'm inspired to work
alongside them every day.
Jetrader: What would you say to your younger self starting out
in the industry today?
TR: Buckle up and enjoy the ride! It's not always going to be fun or easy, but it will
all be worth it if you give everything you have and invest in the people you work
with every day.
Jetrader: What is your
perspective on the future of the
U.S. airline industry?
TR: Coming out of the pandemic, we
saw demand for airline travel surge.
The pandemic reminded us of the
importance of human connection, and
that there is no substitution to being
in person. Air travel is essential, and
that is not going to change. Consumers
want affordable air travel options so
they can go, see and do what brings
meaning into their lives. Just like
Herb believed we could do from our
beginning, Southwest democratized
the skies with affordable low-cost
air travel. I believe making air travel
easy, affordable and flexible will be an
expectation for future generations, and
I'm confident we are well positioned
to prosper in the ever-turbulent airline
industry, which will continue to evolve
to meet the needs of consumers.
