fter Boeing rolled
out the 757-200
passenger aircraft
prototype in 1982,
the first 757-200
was delivered to
Eastern Airlines
in early 1983. During the program's 21year
production run of 1,050 757-200
and 757-300 aircraft, Boeing developed
and delivered the first 757-200PF
(package freighter) to UPS in 1987.
Factory-produced narrowbody
freighter programs have been rare,
as manufacturers have had difficulty
projecting sufficient volumes to cover
their development and certification
costs over the typically much
shorter production run as compared
to a passenger aircraft program.
Accordingly, Boeing's 757-200PF
program was only marginally successful
with 80 delivered aircraft.
It wasn't until 2001 with Boeing's
development of the 757-200SF
passenger-to-freighter conversion
program that the 757-200 started on
the path to dominating the narrowbody
freighter market. Boeing converted
the first block of 757-200SFs and then
sold the supplemental type certificate
(STC) to both ST Aerospace and to
Israel Aerospace Industries. As of
October 2023, the three companies
had produced a combined total of 200
757-200SFs. Precision Conversions
developed its own conversion STC for

delivered as of October 2023.
Boeing 757-200SF/PCF
Capabilities
During the 757-200 conversion process,
a cargo door is installed between the
forward passenger entry door and
the left-side wing of the aircraft. The
passenger floor is reinforced and is
also equipped with cargo handling rails,
rollers and pallet moving systems. The
costs for completing this conversion are
in the US$5-6 million range, excluding
the additional maintenance costs
(usually airframe checks) that normally
occur while passenger aircraft are
converted to freighters.
The 757-200SF/PCF typically
accommodates 14 full-size cargo
pallets on the main deck, along with a
smaller LD3 container. The maximum
range is approximately 2,500 nautical
miles (nm) at the maximum payload of
84,000lbs. The maximum range with
full fuel tanks is approximately 3,800
nm carrying 60,000 pounds of cargo.
