pool of candidates and will offer all of
the membership a clearer picture of how
we must nurture potential leaders from
within our own ranks . To this end, we
acknowledge that the association must
focus efforts on “leadership development”
for our members, just as many of us have
developed growth plans for our medical
staffs . As we have done in 2012, the NAMSS
Board will continue to ask our committee
members, state boards, past leaders and,
more importantly, each association member
to help in the identification, cultivation and
solicitation of future leaders — whether
that be you or among your peers . We
ask that you carefully consider traits and
skill sets necessary in these vital positions,
and look for MSPs that demonstrate them
well . Perhaps such characteristics might
be integrity, responsibility, commitment,
respect and attitude . These are the types
of people that we should encourage to
seek committee appointments, elect to our
state association boards and endorse for
nominations to NAMSS leadership roles .
Do you see these qualities in yourself? Do
you have the passion to serve your peers?
If so, then now is the time to set a course
that will ensure you have the opportunity
to actively participate in your association’s
governance . Just as you would chart your
employment career, it is important to map
out a plan to get you where you want to be
in your volunteerism career, as well . Start
thinking about what education goals you
should have and what leadership positions you
should seek to be eligible at the right point in
your career to serve NAMSS . Talk with your
state association presidents about upcoming
openings on the board, and investigate the
different NAMSS committees’ roles to see
where your interests might align, then reach
out to those chairs to discuss opportunities,
or attend the new NAMSS Volunteer Leaders
Opportunities session to be held at the
NAMSS 37th Educational Conference &
Exhibition . Here we will allow our current
committee chairs and board members to share
with you their own experiences and how they
became leaders in NAMSS as well as how you
can become involved .

Find mentors among your current state
leaders and NAMSS volunteers, who
would be willing to help you develop your
volunteerism path, perhaps by creating a
self-assessment tool that will identify your
needs . But be sure to establish a plan or
path that is flexible so as to be open to
new ideas and turns in the road, as this will
keep it exciting . ■
