In addition to the other documentation,
NAMSS has prepared a helpful hints document
to help members navigate the materials and
results of the survey. It is critical that users of the
study familiarize themselves with the:
• Methodology used
• Executive Summary, especially the Key
Findings section
• Statistical terms presented
• Layout of the report documents – i.e.,
the full study and seven supporting
addendums
• Various work domains and the
performance tasks associated with each
The study is divided into the following
sections for easy review:
• About the Study – provides background on
the study and the research approach taken
• Executive Summary – highlights key
performance trends
• Facility Information – profiles survey
respondents and the characteristics of
their MSSD
• Staffing and Processing Information –
describes the average number and speed
of applicants processed
• Performance Domains and Tasks Data
Tables – represents the bulk of the study
that presents the average number of
hours per week spent on each task;
processes used for each domain; and
identifies the employees’ position
responsible for execution
As regional director of medical staff services
for two Midwest hospitals, Davis offers
a sample presentation she developed to
share with her administration by which to
facilitate an open dialogue concerning key
considerations for staffing enhancements.
Her sample presentation is also available on
the NAMSS website.
For more information on how best to use
the 2009 Medical Staff Services Survey, visit
the NAMSS website at www.namss.org. An
online forum is hosted on the website that
allows members to share their feedback and
questions on how best to utilize the results
of the study. ■
