As the medical staff is changing and hospitals
and accountable care organizations are hiring
more physician employees, the need for tighter
credentialing is ever greater.
Continuing with our features, we learn
about the physician employee and “Best
Practices for Coordination Between the
Medical Staff and Human Resources” in
the article from Catherine Ballard and
Jennifer Nelson Carney . They discuss
the issues hospitals must consider in
acknowledging a physician’s dual role as an
employee and a medical staff member . Amy
Wade discusses yet another staff position
that’s changing in a hospital with her article,
“The Transition to the 21st Century
Medical Services Professional .” She talks
about how the title and the salaries of MSPs
have changed meaning as their role has
transformed over the years .
As the medical staff is changing and hospitals
and accountable care organizations are
hiring more physician employees, the need
for tighter credentialing is ever greater . In
Linda Waldorf’s article, “NAMSS PASSTM —
Creating Efficiencies through Collaboration,”
she explains the importance of NAMSS
PASSTM to the industry . She reminds us that
verifying a practitioner’s affiliation history
is essential to mitigate legal risks associated
with negligent credentialing claims .

This issue’s NAMSS-focused articles include
an article from Connie Riedel challenging
members to consider leadership in NAMSS .
Riedel discusses the changes to the
leadership structure and what it means to be
a leader in this organization . Then, a revised
version of the staffing ratios survey from Di
Hall details the results of the 2009 survey
and includes some great staffing descriptions
that still resonate today . Finally, our member

experiences article features Michelle Hacker
who is the Washington Association Medical
Staff Services (WAMSS) past president .
Hacker shares her story of triumph and how
planning and hard work helped her gain a
first-place prize for her dog’s performance in a
dog show .
As you can see from this issue, there are
a lot of great takeaways for readers . So
much is happening within the industry
and NAMSS continues to remain ahead
of the change, working to keep members
informed and leading the charge the ideal
credentialing solution and NAMSS PASSTM .
Enjoy this issue, and feel free to send us
your thoughts, questions and ideas for
upcoming issues of NAMSS eSYNERGY .
Best,
John Pastrano
