NAMSS continues to have strong reserves
of just over $2.1 million which represents
70% of our total operating expense. Best
practice indicates organizations should
have a minimum of 50% of their operating
expense in reserves so NAMSS exceeds
the gold standard. The bottom line that
every member should take away from this
information is that NAMSS is continuing
to make thoughtful investments in our
members-using our reserves to fund
projects like scholarships, the competency
survey, NAMSS PASS, training of new
instructors and our forthcoming new website
with an online certification center.

All MSPs know that we are operating in
uncertain times. That's why it is so impressive
that NAMSS remains a vital, financially sound
organization helping guide our members
through the evolution of the industry. We
should all be proud of what NAMSS has
achieved this year, and excited for all of the
successes that 2014 is sure to bring. ■

One area where you may notice a decline
is in the "Education Net Assets"-in other
words, the revenue generated by sales
of NAMSS education products. While
these products still made money for the
organization this year, there was a 42
percent decline in revenue from 2012
to 2013. Our education team is paying
attention to these numbers, and interprets
them as a call to action for 2014. We are
currently in the process of conducting a
competency survey in order to help us
understand how the role of the MSP has
evolved, and how it will continue to evolve
in the future. The results of the assessment
will help us determine the gaps between the
work MSPs are currently doing and the work
we will need to be doing in the future to
remain relevant and serve as leaders in the
ever-changing healthcare environment. This
will impact every part of the organization
including development of future educational
products and services.
