few months ago, I was presented
with an unexpected opportunity to
change: a new and exciting position
in my home state of North Carolina. I loved
my present job, the amazing people
I worked with on a daily basis, and life in
the Washington, D.C., area. Embracing this
new opportunity ("change") meant leaving
all of them behind, packing up my home,
moving to another state, and learning a new
culture and job. As I analyzed all these
details, it felt overwhelmingly right to make
the change.
That decision to change brought about
so much unexpected goodness. I had
conversations and hugs with friends,
colleagues, and neighbors that were so
heartwarming and special. We expressed
words of appreciation and even love
for each other. We reflected on fun and
rewarding times together. We celebrated
our successes.
As I arrived at my new destination, again,
I had so much unexpected goodness. My
neighbor brought me food, flowers, and
household items she thought I might need
to get established-she even gave me a
pumpkin for my porch since I had arrived
just before Halloween.

How will you go outside the box in 2014 to
experience the 'goodness of change?'
My new office staff welcomed me with a
homemade breakfast, fresh flowers, and a
beautiful handmade card with each of their
photos and a welcome message.
These acts of goodness are priceless to me.
All these moments of goodness would not
have happened if I had not been willing
to change.

SYNERGY JANUARY/FEBR UARY 2014

As I write this article, I am on a plane
to Austin, Texas, to represent NAMSS at
the ASHRM conference. I have been in
my new position for two weeks. Aside
from moving, saying farewell to those
I am leaving, and saying hello to my new
friends and colleagues, I have attended
orientation to learn the rules and culture
of my new organization, attended software
training, participated in organizational
meetings, attended a local chapter meeting
of NCAMSS (with an educational program
on change!) and right now I am reading
the October 13, 2013, edition of American
Way Magazine, which is full of articles
about change and the positive results of
those changes. American Airlines has a
plan to purchase 460 new airplanes to
bring improved efficiency and comfort to
the company and its customers. Twitter
is successfully being used to analyze
stock market trends. A U.S. Marine is
using dance to heal from his overseas
military experiences.
NAMSS is changing as well. As we begin
a new year, I encourage you to join me in
embracing the goodness of our changes.
I hope you will embrace NAMSS PASS,
enjoy our ongoing improved educational
materials, our expanded SYNERGY with
a new section on managed care and
additional CE opportunities, and NAMSS'
new consolidated monthly e-newsletter
with industry updates.
How will you go outside the box in 2014 to
experience the "goodness of change?"
As editor of SYNERGY, I look forward to
communicating with you through my
bimonthly messages this year. But I hope
it's not a one-way conversation. If you have
questions or suggestions to share, please let
me know.
All the best to you in 2014,
Linda M. Waldorf, BS, CPMSM, CPCS
