Preparing for Success

I

n the last edition of SYNERGY, my editorial
comments were about embracing the
goodness of change. I really appreciate
the thoughtful responses from some of you.
One MSP wrote that she was facing many
upcoming changes with her health system
and was uncertain how the changes would
impact her. The article helped her have a
new perspective on the situation.

As I embark on my own journey of ongoing
change, I have reflected on a new theme for
myself and thought it might benefit others.
That new theme is "Preparing for Success."
When faced with change, we can adopt an
attitude of preparing for success. One of my
upcoming changes is becoming president
of NAMSS in 2015. I am preparing now to
be successful as your president. We have
an awesome NAMSS Board and fantastic
support from the Headquarters team to
help me be ready for this new role. I also
welcome your ideas and thoughts about
NAMSS and how I can best serve you and
our fellow MSPs. Please feel free to contact
me throughout the year.

As MSPs, we are the gatekeepers of patient
safety for all the innocent and trusting human
families in America.
One of the opportunities I have to
prepare for success is to participate in
the SmithBucklin Leadership Institute.
It is a year of intense reading, writing,
and speaking opportunities. My first
assignment is reading "Man's Search for
Meaning" by Viktor E. Frankl. I have to
confess that I would have to describe
the book as grime, but I am gaining

new knowledge and insights. I would
recommend the book to all of us as MSPs,
as it truly helped me recognize that my
meaning in life is to contribute to the
reduction of human suffering.
As MSPs, we are the gatekeepers of patient
safety for all the innocent and trusting
human families in America. Those of us who
work as MSPs, in hospitals especially, we
protect the very sickest of our population.
As an employee at my former hospital,
Suburban in Bethesda, Maryland, Jamie
Willis says, "Our profession is a noble one."
Another opportunity to prepare for
success has been to attend the National
Credentialing Forum. It is a small group of
leaders in credentialing who are from all
aspects of our profession, such as regulatory
agencies, accreditation organizations,
vendors, consultants, NAMSS, and others.
This group serves as a think tank for what
our profession might look like in the
future and how we as leaders can inspire
innovation and improvements for all of us.
The time spent with this outstanding group
of leaders helped me expand my own vision
of the role of NAMSS in charting the future
of our profession.
Each of us has new opportunities before us
and we each can prepare for our successes.
One opportunity we can all embrace
in 2014 is NAMSS PASS. I encourage
everyone to learn about NAMSS PASS and
gain the knowledge and expertise to be
successful. It is a worthwhile endeavor and
will help us have greater success as medical
staff professionals.
I look forward to hearing from you and
learning how you're preparing for success.
