Onboarding
Physicians:
Credentialing Threat or Opportunity?

believe that anyone who has worked for any length of time in credentialing
has become aware of the term "onboarding." Credentialers who are in
large health systems with increasing numbers of employed/contracted
practitioners may have heard the term quite frequently. That doesn't mean
everyone understands what onboarding entails, so let's define what we mean
when we use the term "onboarding."
Physician onboarding is the process by which physicians are recruited and
brought on staff or aligned with a healthcare organization. Onboarding typically
includes a series of tasks and activities that integrate a physician into an
organization. Onboarding of physicians includes the following major activities:
* Recruitment
* Credentialing/privileging
* Contracting/hiring process
* Enrollment with payers
Additional activities included in a comprehensive onboarding process
would include:
* Obtaining malpractice insurance for the physician;
* Marketing activities, such as adding the physician to the organization's
website, and other promotional activities, such as newspaper
announcements, etc.;
* Managing employee health requirements (TB testing, immunizations, etc.);
* Making arrangements for orientation (to the healthcare organization, site
where the physician will be practicing, to the electronic patient record,
and potentially to the medical staff organization);
* Obtaining lab coats, business cards, office signage, etc.;
* And many, many more details.
In fact, there are so many tasks associated with the physician onboarding
process, that some healthcare organizations are using a "concierge
onboarding" approach that focuses on physician service and is structured to
avoid having details fall through the cracks. Concierge onboarding emphasizes
a high-quality, service-focused physician experience. One of the reasons
that healthcare organizations take this approach is to avoid negative first
impressions and to help assure retention of the physician to the organization
(recruitment of physicians is a lengthy, expensive process-keeping them
once you have them is the objective). Many healthcare systems, in analyzing
their onboarding process, have realized that despite the fact that they are a
healthcare system, they appear disjointed and uncoordinated in the eyes of
their newly recruited physicians. They want to eliminate this perception.
Why Is Onboarding Important to MSPs (Medical
Services Professionals)?
Credentaling is a key component of onboarding a physician. The physician
can't provide clinical services to patients until he/she has been successfully
