The Importance of the NAMSS Code of
Professional Conduct and Rules of Ethics

E

ffective Jan. 1, 2014, the NAMSS Ethics
Committee (NEC) and the Certification
Commission of NAMSS Ethics Committee
(CCN) have combined into one body. The
role of this newly combined committee is to
preserve the NAMSS code, educate members
on the code, consult where appropriate,
advise with Board, when needed, and act as
a committee to review written complaints/
allegations. The NEC and the CCN feel
strongly that the Code of Professional
Conduct and Rules of Ethics apply to all
members and those representing the
profession of medical staff services. The Code
of Professional Conduct sets the principles
that connect the values and ideals of the
profession to the work performed by medical

staff professionals. The Rules of Ethics serve
as the standard by which the combined
committees will evaluate alleged professional
misconduct for all members, applicants,
candidates, and certificants of NAMSS.
We have seen colleagues exhibit examples
of scenarios where ethics and morals collide.
Ethics are the rules of a society, organization,
or group, whereas morals are beliefs held
personally or by a close-knit family. Ethics
must, however, win in these circumstances.
In the past year the number of ethics
complaints reported has grown
tremendously. For example, certification as
a Certified Provider Credentialing Specialist
(CPCS) or Certified Professional Medical

Services Management (CPMSM) is becoming
more important to not only medical staff
services professionals but also to their
employers, as there is strong evidence
of the certifications gaining acceptance
in the industry. A large number of the
complaint violations received have been the
fraudulent use of the CPCS or the CPMSM
credentials. People misrepresent themselves
as CPCS or CPMSM certified to secure
employment or to remain in a position
that requires certification after a specific
timeframe. Certificates have been falsified,
and certification has been published by
individuals on business websites.
