for most healthcare systems. The MSP is
in a uniquely qualified position to expand
and remodel the existing credentialing,
privileging, performance management, and
medical staff structures to create and then
shepherd this new flock (sidebar 4).

Change Agents
My theories and suppositions about the
future of healthcare and the MSP role are
just that: theories and suppositions. But they

are certainly based on current realities. I'm
sure each of you can formulate your own
theories about the future. And you should.
Think outside your comfortable box. Think
outside the basic minimums of MSP existence
defined by CMS and TJC. Know where you
want to go so you can take the correct road
to get you there. Be an agent for change and
improvement at your organization.
NAMSS is certainly being an agent of change
nationally by framing the conversation

around improving credentialing standards.
NAMSS can also frame the conversation
about the opportunity to expand the role
of the MSP across the continuum of care.
Perhaps the "gatekeeper of patient safety"
may soon be changed to the "gatekeeper of
health and patient safety."
One thing is certain: Change is inevitable
in healthcare today. MSPs can choose to
be agents of change and create your own
future, or you can instead live with whatever
comes your way. The choice is yours. So
many forks in the road. ■
