Importance: The Nook is Barnes & Noble’s own e-Reader device, launched last year. Featuring a color user control pad (NOT color content), B&N hoped to ride off B&N’s coattails. Getting There: Before getting on the Nook, there are a few simple questions to ask yourself: 1. Can you charge for content? Not an issue if you’re used to charging, but a huge issue if your content is controlled circulation or open, as B&N is in the content business and requires you to charge for it, too. Currently, the minimum price is $0.98. 2. Are you ok without analytics? In a data driven world, publishers are used to knowing everything about who’s reading their content and for how long. On the Nook, you’ll know how many people bought it. Period. You won’t even know who they are. 3. Are you ok without artwork? Though the Nook claims to accept PDF’s, that declaration was made more for book writers than magazine publishers. Thus, the best way to get your magazine on the Nook is by using the Nxtbook GoMobile program, which reformats your content into structured HTML, which is what the device clearly prefers. Analytics: What you’ve sold. Bottom Line: If you like the B&N platform, your time is probably better spent on the NOOKcolor, which will be able to depict your artwork better.
