When We Return to Our
Offices, A New Normal
I
n Mid-March, by order of Governor Wolf, we
packed up our files, temporarily let staff go, and
returned to our homes. We hunkered down to work
and to diligently socially distance, all to help reduce
the spread of COVID-19 and protect ourselves and
others from infection.1
Our worlds abruptly shifted from the varied
activities of busy professional lives to maintaining
our practices and working through virtual meetings,
electronic communications, and phone calls. Even
court appearances came to an end, save those that
were absolutely required, and even those were
mostly attended virtually. The change came suddenly,
with dire warning of infection by a new pathogen,
the novel coronavirus, and the emerging stories of
the resulting illness, COVID-19, were devastating. We
made the abrupt change from active participation
in a socially interactive professional world to staying
home to both reduce our exposure and the spread of
this often-fatal, infectious disease.
In talking to criminal defense lawyer colleagues
and others, I discovered many of us have shared a
similar experience since returning home. Though
initially off putting and anxiety provoking, as the
