OPENING
STATEMENT
P
erspective. In the midst of these dangerous,
disruptive times, I keep coming back to that
word.
We have chosen, and most of us love, a highstakes, stressful occupation. And no, I'm not naïve
or blindly idealistic enough to believe ALL of us
love what we do. In fact, full confession here, I'd
much rather have been a professional baseball
player. My lack of talent squelched that ambition.
Regardless of our level of passion for being a
criminal defense attorney, as opposed to some
other profession, we are committed to it. And,
judging by your membership and commitment to
PACDL, I trust that you, like me, consider yourself
a diligent and effective advocate for your clients
and the profession.
In these critical times, my primary hope is
that you and your families are safe and healthy.
However, it is also my hope that this interruption
of our daily routines has allowed all of us
to re-set, to re-evaluate our (personal and)
professional priorities, and to approach our work
reinvigorated with a new appreciation of the vital
role we play in society.
The practice of law can be professionally and
financially lucrative. But, a singular focus on
financial success is ultimately unfulfilling. Helping
a client during their most difficult moments
regardless of the financial compensation is how

we are essential. I've often described my early
years as an assistant public defender as "the
pure practice of criminal defense" and some
of the happiest days of my professional career,
although I've never lost sight of the fact that it
is always about the client, first and foremost.
One day, hopefully soon, we will be back to
our normal routines. Meanwhile, I encourage all
of you primarily to be safe and also to take the
time away from your office routine to reflect
on what you can do differently in order to be
a more effective, and more fulfilled criminal
defense lawyer.
The pandemic has affected the entire country,
and PACDL is no exception. You are all aware
that we had to cancel the Annual Conference
in Harrisburg. While this will have a negative
financial impact upon the Association, like so
many other organizations during this time, I
assure you that we will continue to succeed in
our mission to advocate for you and achieve
justice. We are ably led during these times
particularly by our Executive Director, Beth
Winters, our Executive Committee, and the
Finance and Audit Committee, chaired by Wana
Saadzoi. We are committed to rescheduling the
Annual Conference later this summer or early
this fall, but obviously those plans are fluid,
considering the everchanging world in which
we now find ourselves.
