Understanding Surreptitious
Recording Tools in the Era of Zoom

onsider this article a primer for attorneys who
want to understand the best methods and
tools to record video conferencing sessions.
Or, in the alternative, consider it a warning that
your video conferencing session may easily be
recorded by others involved in the session without
your knowledge.
First, let us start with the main players: Zoom,
Microsoft Teams, Skype, Google Hangouts, Slack,
GoToMeeting, RingCentral, and many more.
Some of these tools are better than others when
it comes to handling certain features, like multiparty conferencing, setting up waiting rooms and
breakout sessions, and, of course, security features.
But, generally, they all do the same thing: provide
videotelephony and online chat services through
cloud-based peer-to-peer software platforms and
are used for teleconferencing, telecommuting,
distance education, and social relations. Often,
the most distinguishing feature among the best
of these tools is simply the price.
Perhaps you have already been using one or
more of these tools and are aware of the ability
for the session host, or sometimes the session
guests, to record the video conferencing session.
Educators and students frequently use these
recording sessions to preserve lectures for study.
In Zoom, the host can choose the " Record "
button on the main tool bar (it appears as a small
circle) to start recording the session. All session
participants are alerted by a red indicator light
at the top, left side of the screen that the session
is being recorded. At any time, the host can stop
the recording and it is converted to an MP4 video
file that is saved on the PC or stored to the cloud
when the session has concluded.
It is important to note that one critical security
feature in the Zoom recording tool is that video
conferencing guests cannot record the session
without the host's permission. The host can grant
permission for recording by changing his or her
account settings.
There are, however, a few popular and readily
available recording tools that allow session
participants, or perhaps the session host, to
