r+d New Technology: SGIA And Graph Expo Highlights Late last fall, 21,000 attendees hit Graph Expo at Chicago’s McCormick Center. Just one week later, SGIA Expo drew more than 22,000 to its event at the Las Vegas Convention Center in Sin City. The thousands of print providers attending these shows had the opportunity to experience an array of networking opportunities, learn from industry experts, explore new proﬁt centers, and more – while also checking out some of the industry’s latest and greatest technology, products, and supplies. It’s the latter that we’ll showcase here as we report on the various technologies introduced at these two critical industry events. What follows are as many new products as we can squeeze into this print edition. We’ll feature others in our R&D section next issue, and don’t forget to check online, at bigpicture.net, for others. As you scope out the new “toys” on the following pages, you might want to keep in mind the dates for these events in 2013: Graph Expo becomes Print13 this year and takes place September 8-12 in Chicago; SGIA Expo moves to Orlando and is scheduled for October 23-25. We’ll have updates in print and online as both shows near. Acuity Advance Select UV FUJIFILM Fujiﬁlm (fujiﬁlmusa.com) showcased several new printers, including the Acuity Advance Select UV ﬂatbed. The Advance Select builds on the company’s Acuity Advance platform and includes eight independent ink channels. The 8-channel model includes CMYK with an additional channel for cyan and magenta, and the option of two channels of white (allowing for in-line double-strike white capability) or white plus clear ink. Also new are additional vacuum zones to further reduce manual masking, plus new job-handling capabilities. Available in two sizes: Select (49 x 98 in.) and Select X2 (98 x 120 in.); both models can accommodate media up to 1.9-in. thick. A roll-media kit is optional (86-in. wide max). Print resolution: 1200-dpi equivalent. Top speed is 353 sq ft/hr (Select ﬂatbed); production speed is 219 sq ft/hr (Select ﬂatbed). Also from Fujiﬁ lm: • Acuity LED 1600: Previewed in 2011 (see our report, November 2011), it incorporates LED-UV ink, a longlife and low-power-consumption LED lamp system, and a high preci- sion and high-speed printhead. The LED 1600 can accommodate roll and rigid media up to 63-in. wide and up to approximately ½-in. thick. • Uvistar Pro8: First introduced at last year’s drupa show (see our report, July 2012), the Pro8 is a rollfed UV printer with a ﬂatbed option that adds a set of light colors (cmyk) and the ability to switch between 4- and 8-color printing modes. Océ (oceusa.com) launched the new Océ Arizona 480 GT and Arizona 480 XT ﬂatbeds. The 480 GT oﬀers a table size of 49 x 98 in., while the 480 XT model oﬀers a 98 x 120-in. table size.
