As this issue of The Big Picture was readied for press, the story was being bandied about in the headlines due to India reportedly ending its telegram service. But various businesses still oﬀer telegram services in the US and in other countries, for a variety of reasons and applications. American Telegram (americantelegram. com), for instance, oﬀers same-day and next-day telegram delivery here in the States, as well as international telegram delivery service. It specializes in contract-cancellation telegrams, and even oﬀers same-day, hand-delivered telegrams for $35 (plus 79 cents a word). So don’t write the obit for the telegram just yet. In fact, just because a technology is a bit dated doesn’t always mean it cannot still be utilized to good eﬀect. I was reminded of this fact by Jon Scott, owner of JS Graphics in Chicago, as we put together a proﬁ le of his company (see this month’s Print13 preview, pg 28). In telling us about his shop’s equipment roster, he noted that he had recently purchased a previously owned DiCoMed digital scanning back, and was able to modify it for his use. And although his printer roster is varied, he readily admits his tool box includes no brand-new models. “You’ll notice that some of our equipment is not the ‘latest-and-greatest,’ but producing good prints isn’t just about the hardware – it’s also about the operator,” he said to me when I queried him on the issue. “So even though some of our equipment might be older, we can provide better output than many of our competitors.” And, of course, producing good output at a fair proﬁt is what it’s all about.
