upfront upfront News From the HP Graphics Leadership Summit Just prior to Fespa, HP gathered industry journalists and consultants to its Graphic Arts Experience Center in the Atlanta suburb of Alpharetta, Georgia. There, the company not only showcased its 60,000-square-foot training facility and demo center to The Big Picture and other members of the press, but also introduced two new machines: the just-announced HP Latex 3000 printer, and a sneak preview of the Scitex FB10000 press, which would make its world debut a week later in London. The new HP Latex 3000 Printer is capable of 126-in.-wide output (or two 63-in. dual rolls) and utilizes seven HP 881 Latex printheads (12-pL drops) in conjunction with HP 881 Latex Inks (CMYKcm). The 881 inks feature a new HP Latex Optimizer component to suppress feathering and color bleed as well as ensure eﬃcient curing at lower temperatures and less energy; they also feature an anti-scratch agent to aid the resultant print in resisting penetration by sharp objects. Top speed on the new HP Latex 3000 printer is 1950 sq ft/hr in 2-pass Billboard mode (830 sq ft/hr in 6-pass Indoor High-Quality mode); print resolution is 1200 x 1200 dpi max. HP also announced that it has rebranded its HP Designjet and Scitex latex printers and supplies. The new sub-brand for these oﬀerings is HP Latex, “demonstrating the strategic importance of latex to the HP Large Format Graphics portfolio,” the company indicated. The new Latex sub-brand is designed to help customers more easily identify the best HP Latex solution for their shop size and application needs. HP Latex Printing Technologies now include: The HP Latex 260 Printer (formerly the HP Designjet L26500 Printer); the HP Latex 280 Printer (formerly the L28500); the HP Latex 820 Printer (formerly 8 THE BIG PICTURE AUGUST 2013 the LX820); the HP Latex 850 Printer (formerly the LX850); and the HP Latex 3000 Printer. HP Latex inks and supplies are also being rebranded. But perhaps the most intriguing news of the event was that HP was introducing its HP Scitex FB10000 Industrial Press, the company’s new ﬂagship machine (pictured above). Designed for high-volume print service providers – particularly those wanting to shift their retail graphics and corrugated-display applications from analog to digital – the FB10000 oﬀers a top speed of 6727 sq ft/hr and direct-to-board printing. Says Stephen Nigro, senior vice president, Graphics Solutions Business, HP: “The HP Scitex FB10000 Industrial Press changes the game, providing a unique combination of speed, quality, and versatility to costeﬀectively meet the standards set by oﬀset while taking advantage of the short runs, personalization, and quick turnarounds possible with digital.” The 6-color (CMYKcm) FB10000 features HP’s High Dynamic Range (HDR) printing technology, which comprises 16-gray-level printing (for ﬁne gamut resolution, more directly printable colors, and subtle shading in images) as well as dynamic dot-size control (multiple drop volumes: 15-, 30-, and 45-pL). The press also features new HP HDR240 Scitex Inks – pigmented UV-curable inks designed to achieve excellent adhesion on a wide media range at high productivity and comply with ISO prooﬁng standards, HP reports. The press can accommodate rigid or ﬂexible media up to 63 x 126 in., up to 1-in. thick. Users can choose between optional sheet-to-sheet ¾-automatic loading, semi-automatic, and manual loading and unloading, or up to 4-sheet simultaneous printing with an optional multi-sheet loader kit.
