rr+ d +d London Calling: FESPA 2013 If you were unable to get across the Pond and check into London’s ExCel Exhibition Centre for FESPA 2013 earlier this summer, you missed quite the extravaganza. The megashow, held every three years, drew more than 22,000 visitors during its ﬁve days and featured an array of events for digital print providers, screen printers, sign shops, and others in the graphic arts. In the event’s show hall, divided into two separated ﬂoor sections, more than 650 manufacturers and suppliers exhibited their existing wares and, of course, launched an array of new products. What follows are just a few of the newly introduced machines, tools, and supplies that we spotted on the event ﬂoor; we’ll add more into our regularly appearing R&D section in coming months and on bigpicture.net. Keep in mind that FESPA is primarily a European show; some of the products on the show ﬂoor and some we report on here may not be available in the US marketplace at this time. 34 THE BIG PICTURE SEPTEMBER 2013 Agfa Graphics (agfagraphics.com) moved into textile printing with the introduction of its Ardeco printer for soft signage. The rollfed Ardeco utilizes dye-sublimation inks and features: a built-in calendering unit; a textile-dedicated transport system; 8 or 12 Ricoh Gen 4 printheads (384 nozzles/head, 7-pL drop size); a max. print width of 126 in.; and a top resolution of 1200 dpi. A set of coldcutting knives for in-line ﬁnishing is optional. Also new is the Anapurna M3200 RTR, a 126-in. UV rollfed that features 6 colors (CMYKcm) and a 1440-dpi max. resolution. Designed as a heavy-duty production tool for indoor and outdoor applications, the M3200 RTR utilizes KM1024i 12-pL heads, supports dual-roll printing, and has a max. resolution of 1440 dpi. Features include a set of shuttle safety sensors to prevent printheads from touching the substrate; a 2-zone vacuum table; an ionization bar to remove electrostatic loads on media; and Agfa’s new Asanti workﬂow for the sign and display market Ardeco AGFA GRAPHICS (see below). A trolley to handle heavy rolls up to 330 lbs is optional. Also making its debut was the Jeti TitanX UV ﬂatbed. Featuring a bed size of 79 x 122 in., the TitanX oﬀers the ability to switch from 4 to 6 colors (CMYKcm) and back, on a job-by-job basis; top speed is 2433 sq ft/hr. Other features include Agfa’s fast-curing Anuvia UV inks; an auto head-height system; media-detection sensor; and in-line shuttle safety sensors. Max. media thickness is 2 in. The printer also oﬀers a ﬂat-to-roll (FTR) option. And, Agfa introduced its Asanti automated workﬂow solution, speciﬁcally for the wide-format sign and display markets. Having roots in the company’s Apogee technology, Asanti’s rendering is based on Adobe PDF Print Engine standards, enabling JDF control for automated accountability, Agfa reports.
