Interview with Adam Carver, president of Pixelwerx

Solutions America: Adam, when you were initially introduced
to the Océ Colorado 1640 printer, did it all seem too good to be
true, and what convinced you to move forward with the acquisition of this product?
ADAM CARVER, president, Pixelwerx (pixelwerx.net):
The first time I heard about it was when our sales person came
to our office, and he was there and he told me, "Oh, there's this
new UV-curable roll-to-roll printer coming out and it's going to be
great." I told him there's no way I want that - there's hundreds of
reasons why I'm not interested in a UV-curable roll-to-roll printer.
That's how that meeting ended, I told him "No thanks."
But as the specs on the printer came out, I became more and
more interested. Being a business owner, you can understand

why I'm a "numbers person." When it comes to justifying a purchase of this new piece of equipment, the numbers have to make
sense, and when I looked at the ROI behind the machine and the
inks savings, it felt like it was too good to be true.
The reason was that up until the Colorado, when new printer
or print technology was released, for example the "next level"
latex, eco-solvent, aqueous, or UV-curable system, typically they
get a little faster, a little better, but not like what the Océ Colorado 1640 printer was claiming. It was better in every way, it was
more productive, it was cheaper to run, the quality was better,
even the build quality was much better.
The Colorado now piqued my interest to the point where I sat
down and really crunched the numbers. I looked at what we were
spending on ink for latex systems, and I thought that even if the
Colorado numbers were half-true, it still made sense.
I flew out to the ISA show in Las Vegas to see it live for myself. There were hordes of people around and a lot of excitement
in the booth. I was impressed with it, I was impressed with
the speed, productivity, quality, and the ROI. I was impressed
enough that I placed an order for it right there, and I have been
extremely happy with my decision, and the product has performed beyond my expectations.

JOHN: Now that you have had the Océ Colorado 1640 printer for
eight months or so, what has surprised you the most and what
benefits have you witnessed that you had not considered when
making the initial acquisition?
ADAM: Our Canon Océ sales person simply stated facts regarding the speed, efficiency, and ink consumption. Any one of those
could have sold us on the printer; the fact that it's also built in a
superior way and that it requires significantly less labor to run is
a huge bonus to us. I laugh when I think about it, but I was surprised at how boring a Colorado is to run - it's very robotic, and
there's very little interaction with this machine when compared to
the other print devices we have in our shop.
JOHN: So Adam, "Seeing was believing?"
ADAM: Yes, it sure was.
