BREAKING INTO TEXTILES
MAKING TEXTILE CUTTING A PERFECT FIT
Considering expanding your textile cutting capabilities? Laser
options, such as the 100W Zünd laser, certainly offer tremendous
advantages over cutting with a hot knife and straight edge. Unlike
blade-based cutting tools, the laser can do
two functions at once - cut the fabric and seal
the edges. This eliminates the potential for
fraying without having to add an extra finishing
step - a perfect solution for woven polyester
fabrics, a material especially prone to fraying
but the substrate of choice for digitally printed
silicone-edge graphics (SEG), backlit displays,
and teardrop flag banners.
For other materials, including non-woven,
knitted fabrics, or any closed-loop textiles,
fraying is not a big concern, if one at all. For
these applications, blade cutting tools - such as
the Zünd motor-driven rotary blade DRT - are
generally much less expensive to purchase and more productive to operate than the laser options available for multipurpose
machines. Simultaneous cutting and edge sealing is also less desirable in production scenarios where sewing is a required function
or where the burning and melting involved in laser-cutting result in
discoloured, brittle, or otherwise unsuitable edges.
