Blackout Signs helps a unique store take flight.
A
cool thing about projects we
handle is meeting the interesting
people who ask us to build their
signs. We enjoy digging a little
deeper and getting to know their
tastes and interests. We learn a
lot during this process; often, the
most important thing is the client's
reasoning behind their business'
name. San Marcos, approximately
30 miles from Austin, is a laid-back
town, with a dynamic mixture of
fun shops, that's blessed with a
beautiful, spring-fed river that runs
through downtown. It's also home
to Texas State Univ., a rapidly
growing school with more than
35,000 students. The lively mix of
college students, professionals and
quirky "San Martians" exudes a
creative vibe and a climate favorable to unique sign work.
A cool customer
We particularly enjoyed meeting
Katinka Pinka, a jewelry designer,
seamstress and antique dealer who
also owns Bower Bird Antiques
Jay Gordon, owner of Blackout Signs (San Marcos, TX), fabricated a captivating
neon sign for Bower Bird Antiques & Curiosities, a San Marcos shop that sells an
array of unique vintage items. Gordon said the shop's owner, Katinka Pinka, is
"very adept at recognizing relics and giving them a second chance for discovery."
The sign will certainly provide San Martians with a great opportunity to discover
the shop with a neon sign that will gain attention in a town that boasts a springfed river that runs through its downtown, and Texas State Univ., a school with an
enrollment of more than 35,000 students.
Gordon created a pencil-and-paper sketch outline to
illustrate the concept to Pinka. He envisioned the bower
bird's depiction (a bower is a bird that scavenges assorted
materials to create its nests) as a reflection of Pinka's
unique collection. He transferred the images to carbon
paper, which created a cutting template.

Gordon cut the shapes from 0.063-in.-thick aluminum
with a jigsaw. Next, he welded the sign's angle frame and
tubing, and MIG-welded the components together with a
Millermatic 252 single-phase welder.
