ST UPDATE Study Shines Light on Luminance Standards Penn State University researchers reported that standardized testing for lighting values in many color combinations employed for on-premise signs can be as effective or more effective (and more costefficient) than assessing signs using a luminance meter. It is becoming more common for local municipalities to request lighting and sign brightness information on sign permit applications. Single- and double-sided cabinet signs were tested using both fluorescent and LED lighting, as well as individual channel letters utilizing LEDs. The United States Sign Council (USSC) Foundation funded the sign lighting study, which is available to USSC members. The USSC will deliver a seminar on its findings and will propose national sign-illumination standards at the American Planning Association's National Conference (New York City, May 6-9).
