formats and colors. "Make them
simple and recognizable," Babinetz
advised, adding that the material
allows considerable durability, including outdoors. "For a public building,
these signs need to last a long time."
You get out of CNC engraved signs
exactly what you put into them, of
course, and this allows not only for
quality of precision, but also for quantity.
"This was a small project for us,"
Babinetz said of Pasco County. "We do
a lot of office buildings and schools,"
and the total number of wayfinding,
restroom, office/classroom ID and
other simple, straightforward signs
that any large complex would need,
make very nice orders.

signs that were produced at the time
of their last remodel that predates
my work with them," said Pete Witte,
vice president of Baron Engraving
(Cincinnati). "So we accepted the
challenge and took at a look at their
existing ADA signs." After checking
those out, programming the design
was no problem.
Baron Engraving used one of its
Newing-Hall rotary engraving machines to cut out raised letters from
Rowmark ADA Alternative .032
material using a parallel bit. Then, they
added braille using the same machine
to drill raster holes. Baron Engraving
purchases the rasters used to create
braille dots from Accent Signage
Systems in Minneapolis. For the substrate, they used Rowmark 1/8-in. clear
Ultra-Matte painted a navy blue.
"To create the channels, we mask
off the horizontal windows with vinyl
paint mask," Witte said. "We cut the
mask on a standard Graphtec vinyl
plotter and apply it to the backside
peel areas we want navy blue and back
spray the faceplate." In meantime, they
cut out letters out from the Rowmark
ADA alternative material and have
them ready for install on the front of
faceplate when it's dry."To create braille,
we use a translator and braille font that
are available from Lamro in Mesa,
AZ," Witte said. After braille is added
using the Newing-Hall engraver, they
then apply the raised copy in the proper
location to complete the faceplate.
"The big advantage of this project
being an engraved ADA sign was the
ability to do a smaller quantity of signs
but still have a nice profit margin,"
Witte said. "Plus, the customer didn't
have to pay an exorbitant amount
for the signs like they would if they
were photopolymer or acid etched."
Sounds like a satisfied diner who has
cleaned his plate.
