FRANMAR

You work with a lot of printers on screen
cleaning and reclaiming processes that
figure into their sustainability initiatives.
Are your customers saying that they are
facing more scrutiny on their production
practices from the clients today?
A couple years ago when we rebranded,
we took a very close look at our packaging
and the amount of materials used to make
it. When we redesigned, we crafted a set
of packages that reduces the overall
amount of plastic and cardboard that ends
up in the consumer's hands. Since the
beginning of Franmar, we've always taken
the approach that a quart sprayer bottle
can have a long life in the washout booth
if it is refilled. With our rebrand and
redesign, our gallon and 5-gallon
cubitainers now make refilling quarts even
easier. They sit on a shelf nicely with a
spigot that makes refilling even easier. No
longer do screen printers need to use
funnels or worry about spilling product as
they refill. When the cubitainers are empty,
both the cardboard and the plastic
bladder inside the cubitainer are recyclable, which fits nicely into the notion of
reducing, reusing, and recycling.

Not only has Franmar committed to
reducing the amount of packaging
materials used to get our chemicals to our
consumers, but the soy ester that we use
to manufacture and blend our screen
cleaning products also comes from a
sustainable source. We are fortunate to be
located in the middle of some of the most
productive farmland in the country and at
this time of year, the fields are full of
soybeans. Our soy ester is sourced from
vendors not far from the fields that
surround our facility. So from a sustainability standpoint, our soy source is always
being renewed and is abundant.
What are some of the more common
areas where the typical shop can improve
its practices in the screenroom as it relates
to chemical usage?
Chemicals can represent a fairly large part
of ongoing operating costs as it relates to
the art and practice of screen printing. It
isn't uncommon to see overuse of
chemicals while in the washout booth.
Anytime that you are using a great deal of
a product to clean up, either because of
overuse or lack of effectiveness, you are
essentially washing potential profit down
the drain.
Franmar's products work incredibly
well, and you don't have to use that much
to get your screens clean. On average, we
figure that, with proper usage, you can
clean 60 to 80 screens per quart with our
Plastisol Ink Remover. That figures to be a
little over a quarter of an ounce of cleaner

per screen, or about five sprays per side
of the screen. We take that same type of

effectiveness and bring it to all of our
other products in the screen cleaning line,
whether it is breaking down dried
water-based inks or fully reclaiming a
screen for new artwork.
Our four-step screen reclamation
process goes from degrading and
cleaning the ink off the screen in the first
step to using an emulsion remover in the
second step. Once the emulsion is gone,
if you need to remove a haze image, our
Haze Remover will take care of that. And
the final step we recommend is our
Screen Degreaser, so that a new emulsion
will adhere properly. Taking a screen from
having just been on the press to a blank
screen using our four-step process will
cost you less than a dollar for all the
chemicals used in the process. Saving
money and getting longer life out of your
screens means that you will end up with
more profit at the end of a job.
What are your thoughts and expectations
headed into the SGIA Expo?
We are excited to be heading to the show
and plan to see a lot of people there. You'll
see live demonstrations and have the
opportunity to purchase a trial kit if you've
never used Franmar products before. You'll
also be able to see our new Haze Remover
ES. This revolutionary product won't lock in
the emulsion and can be used to rid
excessive haze from screens that will be
cataloged to use again.
