Glass printing is part of the wider movement in the print industry toward nonconventional products unlike those in traditional graphic applications. Inks and
materials, printing systems, and technology
and know-how are helping to develop this
overall sector of functional and industrial
printing - one that offers promising growth
opportunities for the industry.
According to recent research published
by Smithers Pira, this industry is collectively quantified as being worth $76.9 billion in
2017, up from $37.2 billion in 2012. Broadening existing applications and developing
new market niches will lead to further
growth to $114.8 billion in 2022. The sectors
described and assessed in the research
include décor and laminates; ceramics;
electronics, including displays and photovoltaics; glass; aerospace and automotive;
biomedical; promotional and miscellaneous
items; 3D printing; and inkjet-printed
textiles. All of these segments are growing,
printed by a variety of specialty analog
methods and inkjet.
In 2012, decorative printing of décor and
laminates was the biggest sector, responsible for a third of the total value, but its
share of the industrial market will fall as
electronics, digital textiles, and 3D printing
all grow much faster across the period. By
2022, décor will account for 17 percent of
the market while electronics printing will
grow to over 41.5 percent.

printing and 3D will be the fastest-growing
market segments, further pushing inkjet as
the most valuable printing process in use
after it overtook screen printing during
2017 - although, of course, not all of this
value in the 3D printing sector is a traditional inkjet mechanism.
