ST MEDIA GROUP'S
WINIFRED SWORMSTEDT
PASSES AWAY
Winifred Bronson Swormstedt died
on May 8 at the age of 89. She was
an owner and board member for
Screen Printing's parent company,
ST Media Group, and the mother of
Tod and Wade Swormstedt, Signs of
the Times' (Screen Printing's sister
publication) former publishers and
editors. "Winnie" accompanied her
late husband, Dave Reid Swormstedt
Jr., former president of ST Media
Group, on numerous trips to the
National Electric Sign Association
(NESA, now ISA) tradeshows.
A native of Winchester, Connecticut,
Winnie graduated from Keuka
College in upstate New York in 1951.
She worked as a teacher and the
director of the nursery school at
St. Paul United Methodist Church in
Madeira, Ohio.

CLEMSON UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
UTILIZE MIMAKI 3D PRINTER
Clemson University's Sonoco Institute of
Packaging Design and Graphics is using a
new 3D printer for such classes as 3D Printing
Workflow and Product/Package Design and
Prototyping. Students are utilizing a full-color,
commercial Mimaki 3DUJ-553 for educational
and research initiatives, as part of a continued
partnership between the university and
printer manufacturer.
Students gain hands-on experience in the
design and printing of 3D objects. "I want to
show that it is beneficial for reducing the
number of individual parts in a product and its
assembly process, and can be used to create
unique forms, fits, and functions," says Shu
Chang, Ph.D, who teaches the 3D printing class.
The design and prototyping course offers
pupils a chance to test their designs, which is
how many companies utilize 3D printing to
quickly prototype and test a package.
"Students design a perfume or cologne
bottle, and after we 3D-print it, they can test
its functionality," says Haley Appleby,
instructor for the class. With tangible, printed
products in their hands, students are able to
understand more about the technical and
functional aspects of design, she says.

EPSON LAUNCHES NEW
CERTIFIED SOLUTION CENTER

DURST OPENS NEW HEADQUARTERS,
CUSTOMER EXPERIENCE CENTER
Durst has announced the opening of its new headquarters and Customer
Experience Center in Brixen, Italy. More than 1000 customers, employees,
and business partners attended an inauguration ceremony in April for the
61,000-plus-square-foot HQ building, featuring a pixelated design in
homage to the company's background in printing. The ceremony coincided
with the announcement of Christoph Gamper's appointment as CEO and
Harald Oberrauch's succession to president, taking the reins from his
father, Christof Oberrauch.

Epson has announced the opening of its
first Epson Certified Solution Center in
Canada at TG Graphics in Toronto. The
center showcases Epson's print portfolio,
featuring hands-on demos of signage,
dye sublimation, and direct-to-garment
equipment including the SureColor
S-Series, SureColor F-Series and SureColor
P-Series of wide-format printers, and
offers customer training courses and
print samples and applications.
"Our goal is to provide customers
with a wonderful learning experience
when they visit our facility for personal
demos or open house events," says Al
Proulx, president, TG Graphics Canada,
in a release.
