Whether choosing props for windows or a full visual merchandising program, retailers should stick with a mantra of clean and simple, says Tom Beebe, vp, creative services, of New York-based HMX Group. “Props should enhance, not control the window.” Moving beyond shadows and over-propping, the trend Beebe sees is toward classic shapes and using props to add movement that can attract shoppers’ attention. Repetition of elements, such as a collection of old-fashioned light bulbs or natural flowers and branches, can also make a powerful statement. “All props should have a purpose and enhance the environment,” says Beebe. —Whitney Harrod
