Winter Park Resort

For the second time, you'll cross the Continental
Divide, now on Highway 40 en route to Winter Park
Resort. Although known for dozens of beginner, intermediate and expert runs across its 3,000 skiable acres,
this family-friendly resort offers plenty of amenities for
those who don't ski or snowboard. A new tubing hill
opens this season, a welcome complement to existing
ice skating, snowshoeing, snowcat rides and s'mores
by the village ﬁre pit. Warm up with homemade soups
from the Back Bowl Soup Company or with gooey
gorgonzola fondue at Deno's Mountain Bistro.

Granby Ranch

Continue down Highway 40, where Fraser River slices
through area ranch lands as evergreens march up the
hills into the Roosevelt National Forest. To the east
spreads the smaller ski resort Granby Ranch, known for
its high percentage of intermediate and beginner trails.
It offers some black runs as well, but the gentle terrain
and shorter runs make it ideal for people who don't ski

every day. And snowshoeing or Nordic skiing offer an
exciting change of pace after a day on the slopes.

Steamboat Ski & Resort

Tucked among ranches, Steamboat Ski & Resort is
where Joe McElroy, an area rancher, coined the phrase
"champagne powder" because of the way the light
snow tickles your nose like bubbles in champagne.
Here, you're as likely to see someone skiing in chaps
and a Stetson as a Columbia jacket. It's also known for
producing more winter Olympians than any other place
in North America. Why? Perhaps because in addition
to nearly 3,000 skiable acres, Steamboat presents four
progressive terrain parks, a freestyle course (for competition only, observers welcome) and a ski jumping hill.
Pop downtown to F.M. Light & Sons, which has been
selling cowboy hats and boots since 1905.
