to celebrate the season.

The largest barrier reef in the northern hemisphere,
the Mesoamerican Reef hugs Belize on its nearly-700mile route from southern Mexico to Honduras, with
some of the most accessible sections in the friendly
Central American country. Roughly 450 sand and
mangrove isles, three coral atolls - Lighthouse Reef,
Glovers Reef and Turneffe Atoll - and a thriving
population of over 500 species of ﬁsh and numerous
sea creatures are enveloped by the Belize Barrier Reef
Reserve System. The reserve, a UNESCO World
Heritage Site, is prized by marine biologists, recreational
divers and island hoppers alike.
Made famous by underwater explorer Jacques
Cousteau, the submarine sinkhole known as the Great
Blue Hole plunges over 400 feet in the coral ﬂoor,
drawing scuba divers to remote Lighthouse Reef.
Eighteenth-century pirate brothers John and Rodger
Glover lend their names to Glovers Reef, a 135-squaremile atoll dotted with islands and some 800 reef
patches that sometimes come out of the water.
Protected as the Glover's Reef Marine Reserve, the
atoll is considered a critical habitat by the Wildlife

Conservation Society for lobster, grouper and other ﬁsh
important to commercial ﬁsheries.
The largest and most bio-diverse, Turneffe Atoll
supports nesting sea turtles, harbors healthy populations of both the Antillean manatee and American
crocodile, and is a nursery for bottlenose dolphins.
Travelers can immerse themselves in coral wonder
by land or by sea. From a base on Amergris Caye, the
largest of the offshore islands, Members can stroll
secluded beaches and explore unspoiled nature
