SCENIC ROUTE

Winding through the forests and
fields of North Carolina and Virginia for
469 miles, the Blue Ridge Parkway was built
to connect Shenandoah National Park and Great
Smoky Mountains National Park. But it's more than just a
roadway. As it dips and winds and curves, the Parkway shows
off some of the most stunning scenery in the Eastern United
States, without the billboards, signs, traffic lights or even utility poles that mar the view from more traditional highways.
Beyond the stunning landscapes are towns, villages, historic
sights and hiking trails are set in the land that surrounds the
two-lane asphalt ribbon.To find them, exit at the corresponding
milepost on the parkway (The markers start with 0 in Virginia and go up as you drive south.) Once
you've exited, signs will lead you to your destination.
Hump- back Rocks Visitor Center (MP 5.9)
Nature and history come together at this stop, which includes hiking trails and a farm museum. Park at the Humpback Rocks Visitor Center, where you'll find a recreated mountain farm reminiscent of the 1890s and then head to
the Humpback Rocks Trail. Follow blue blazes to reach overlooks - the hike to Humpback Rocks is just a mile
long but strenuous - or drive to the Humpback Rocks Picnic Area (MP 8.5) and stroll less than a half-mile along
the Catoctin Trail to a view of the Shenandoah Valley.
Peaks of Otter (MP 86)
Sharp Top, Flat Top and Harkening Hill comprise the Peaks of Otter, which have attracted visitors thousands of
years. Outdoorsy types can hike the site's 12 miles of trails; including Sharp Top, with its views all the way to the
Allegheny Mountains. You can also stroll along Abbott Lake's pretty mile-long path or picnic at Little Stony Creek.
If you'd rather dine indoors, the 63-room Peaks of Otter Lodge is open year-round and overlooks Abbott Lake.
