SWEDEN
Adventurers
and athletes
will find themselves at home in
beautiful Sweden.
During the spring
and summer, visitors
can explore the West
Coast by kayak or
embark on a timber-rafting
adventure in the province of
Varmland. In wintertime
Sweden, there's skiing, skating
and dog-sledding.
For a bit of culture, hit
Stockholm, Sweden's more than
700-year-old capital city built on 14
islands. Stockholm showcases the
country's rich heritage and dedication
to the arts, and the Old Town with its
cobblestone streets, Royal Palace, Gothic
churches and beautifully preserved build-

ings offer clues to its history.
If you visit one museum in Stockholm, make it
the Vasa Museum, which showcases the world's
only preserved 17th century ship and gives visitors an up-close look at it. The Vasa, which was
the most powerful warship in the Baltic when it
was set to launch in 1628, sank in the Stockholm
harbor within minutes after setting sail for the
first time. The tragedy, which included 30 dead,
ended with a service instead of a celebration.
Modern navigation and engineering revealed
that the ship capsized due to a faulty design, and
some say, to the vanity of a king who demanded
heavy arms and monuments onboard.
Interestingly, the bones of 17 individuals have
been found and are now being studied for information on how they lived.
Before you move on to other Swedish
cities-the country is home to 15 UNESCO
World Heritage sites-have fun doing the
"ABBA City Walk" or the Stieg Larsson
"Millennium tour."

DENMARK
Denmark, with its lively roster of attractions and historical parks, is a great place
to vacation with children.
Check out Tivoli Gardens, the 173-yearold Copenhagen amusement park that
inspired visitors such as Hans Christian
Andersen and Walt Disney. Tivoli's
rides were designed to match its gardens and architecture-from the
1914 wooden roller coaster, one
of only seven coasters worldwide to have a brakeman on
board every train, to the
heart-racing Vertigo, which
flips you upside down at
a brisk 62 miles per

youngsters won't want to miss 103-year-old
Little Mermaid, the sculpture dedicated to
Hans Christian Andersen and located near
the cruise pier.
