Tiny frogs with see-through bellies, hog-nosed rats
and snakehead fish: No longer the mythical visions of folklore,
these newly discovered creatures hop, scurry and glide through
our globe's far-reaching corners. Travel to their homes and meet
their neighbors; you'll discover worlds so rich and diverse, they
managed to keep fabled critters like these hidden for ages.

Kermit the Frog
Where to find it: Which came first, the frog or the
Muppet? Even close up, it's hard to tell the differences
between Jim Henson's loveable straight man and the
lime-green, white-eyed glass frog discovered by South
American researchers in Costa Rica rain forests last year.
Animals in the Area: An amphibian hotspot, Central
and South America's tropical rainforests are home to
more than 100 other glass frog species. These nocturnal
croakers are tiny-most smaller than an inch-and
recognized by their translucent underside and green
coloring that protects them while they snooze their
days away among the leaves.
See for yourself: Because of their camouflage, glass
frogs can be tough to spot in the wild. At Costa Rica's
Arenal Natura Ecological Park, you can examine them
up-close - along with the colorful red-eyed tree frog
and poison dart frogs. While you're there, don't miss a
stroll through the orchid garden.

Snakehead Fish
Where to find it: Not only can this West Bengal
species survive on land up to four days, it can
wriggle its way a quarter of a mile from one stream
to another. Such a diverse skillset, seemingly more
reminiscent of a clumsy snake than a fish, the new
species has a vibrant color that is different than
other species of snakeheads.
Animals in the Area: The Eastern Himalayas is one
of only two regions across the globe where elephants,
tigers and rhinos co-exist. Not to be outdone, one
of the world's rarest dolphins splashes in Eastern
Himalayan rivers.
See for yourself: Hop on an elephant and take a
ride through the Kaziranga National Park, a UNESCO
World Heritage site in Assam, India. Two-thirds of
the world's one-horned rhinos graze along the park's
fertile soil. You'll witness an astounding breadth of
wildlife, including wild water buffalo, swamp deer,
sloth bears, golden jackals, king cobras, and the rare
Bengal florican bird.
