A Family Reunion - International Style

When Beth Schulman's two older
children decided to do college study
abroad terms at the same time, she
knew that it was the perfect chance to
begin exploring the world.
"I had never really been out of
the country, and I was turning
50," Schulman said. So she
decided the moment was right to
ask their AAA Travel Agent
Shannon Ondecker to help
arrange a "very special family visit"
for "an experience I never thought
I'd have the chance to have."
The Schulmans started working with
Ondecker in the Ballantyne office in
2013, when the family planned an Alaska
cruise. She quickly showed them the best
cruise for their needs, and they realized
that she made booking travel much easier.
Which would soon prove to be
invaluable when it came to arranging a
multi-stop itinerary in Europe for a
variety of family members coming from
different destinations. The firstchallenge
was the logistics of travel arrangements
for Beth, her husband David, and her
younger son to arrive in Europe. Once
in London, they would meet their older
son for the weekend who was attending
King's College. Their daughter, who was
studying in Italy, would also come to
London for the weekend to see the
family. During the week, Beth, David
and their younger son planned to tour
Scotland. Then the entire family would
have another family reunion in Italy at
her daughter's school, with her older son
flying in from London.
"It was challenging to organize the
inter-Europe flights and make sure the
children arrived at each destination at
specific times," Ondecker explained. "I
used an independent travel company to
encompass all components of the trip
'under one roof' instead of booking each
trip separately."

Ondecker's decision was the right
one, especially when Schulman's father
decided to come at the last minute.
"When we told him that we were
going to Italy for spring break, he became
very excited to join us," Schulman said.
"My father is admittedly more high
maintenance than the rest of us. At his
age, he has very specific dos and don'ts for
how he likes to travel," Schulman said. "I
put him in touch with Shannon, and she
met every mark!"
Ondecker was not only able to cater to
the father's desire for a more luxurious
experience, she also was able to have the
entire family travel together. However, a
passport problem threatened to derail the
Schulmans's carefully curated itinerary
before they left.
