Newport,
Rhode Island
As classic as khakis and blue-and-white-striped
tees, Newport, Rhode Island, endures as a destination
that's always in style. Here, tucked on a peninsula of
Aquidneck Island and hemmed by Narragansett Bay,
the glamour of 19th-century mansions and sleek
yachts intersect with seafood snagged from the sea
the same day and eclectic shopping along
cobblestone streets.
Historic Charms
Remnants of the city's 300-year-old past are visible
in Colonial architecture in the Old Quarter - a
wonderfully walkable neighborhood (Newport's
oldest) filled with restaurants, boutiques and three
centuries of stories. Enjoy a guided visit or poke
around the Redwood Library, Colony House and
Trinity Church on your own. Sit down for lunch or
dinner at the White Horse Tavern, in operation since
1673, to feast on dishes featuring local ingredients
from the briny waters and agriculturally rich area

downtown restaurants to nosh on fresh lobster, clams,
oysters, crab cakes, plus plenty of catches of the day.

Nautical Walks
It is easy to work up an appetite in the "City by the
Sea." Stroll the 3.5-mile Cliff Walk, which winds past
the backyards of America's Gilded Age summer
homes on one side and views of sheer cliff drops and
crashing waves on the other. Take a harbor tour to
see the sublime panoramic from the deck of a yacht
or schooner. Newport, the "Sailing Capital of the
World," claims the largest fleet of America's Cup
12-meter yachts in the world, many of which are
available to charter.

Be sure to treat yourself to the opulence of Ochre
Point Avenue and Bellevue Avenue, where lengthy
driveways lead to the front doors and glitzy interiors
of The Breakers, Rosecliff, Chateau-sur-Mer and more
"cottages" of the Vanderbilts, Doris Duke and other
iconic American families - most open seasonally for
tours. Finally, relax on a local beach, where your
sailor-inspired bathing suit is the perfect choice for
this timeless maritime community.
