Few destinations say
" summer " more than beach
boardwalks, where visitors
promenade between sweet
shops, classic arcades and
amusement parks. Here
are a few of our top picks
in the U.S. for good
old-fashioned fun.
History: Soda fountain entrepreneur
Charles Jenkinson founded his
eponymous Pavilion in 1928 along
the formerly sleepy Point Pleasant
Beach boardwalk. The Pavilion began
with a candy shop, soda fountain and
refreshment stand. Over the years
Jenkinson's enterprises eclipsed
nearly the entire boardwalk with a
dance hall, pool and other attractions.
An amusement park, aquarium and a
throw-back funhouse were added later.
Aquarium, arcades and sweet shop are
open daily year round. Other attractions
are open seasonally.
Don't Miss: New for the 2021 season,
Jenkinson's added the 7D Dark Ride
and the Adventure Lookout Ropes
Course. The 7D ride displays a 3D movie
and adds sound, movement and more.
Choose between a zombie- or carnivalthemed
movie for that adrenaline rush. At
the ropes course, families find a different
thrill ride with a zip line and other highflying
obstacles.
Rehoboth Beach

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware
History: The city built its original
boardwalk along the ocean front
in 1873. It's changed shape and
configuration over the years, but some
things on the boardwalk remain the
same. In 1879, the original Henlopen
Hotel opened; a hotel of the same name
still stands. Along with local resorts and
a paved highway to Washington D.C.,
the now mile-long boardwalk helped the
city earn its moniker as the " Nation's
Summer Capital. "
Don't Miss: With the exception of the
COVID-19 pandemic, the Rehoboth
Beach Bandstand has been presenting
free music, movies and variety acts to the
public each summer since 1963. Pick up
some traditional boardwalk snacks, such
as salt-and-vinegar fries from Thrasher's
French Fries, before the show.
