UNSPOILED
When trying to encapsulate the Seychelles in a single word,
" unspoiled " is the best description. This archipelago is about
1,000 miles from any other land, and its palm-fringed beauty
has remained largely untouched. The warm, nearly translucent
blue waters kiss undeveloped beaches, some filled with soft,
white sand and others punctuated by granite formations. The
Seychelles epitomizes paradise: sunny skies, pristine coastline,
fresh seafood, gentle breezes and luxury accommodations.
ISLAND HOPPING
You can get around the roughly 41 central granite islands and
72 outer coral ones by charter flights, fast catamarans and even
helicopters, depending on where you want to go. Once you're
there, you can explore on foot or rent a foot bike-a hybrid
bicycle/scooter, some of which are even motorized!
MAHÉ
Seychelles' largest island presents opportunities for snorkeling,
notably at St. Anne Marine National Park, but it is also a
cultural hub for Creole restaurants, Seychellois art and a local
seafood and fruit market in the capital city of Victoria. A
fragrant walk through the vanilla, cinnamon and nutmeg plants
of Le Jardin du Roi recalls the Seychelles' role during the 18th
century spice trade.
PRASLIN
The second largest island boasts one of the Seychelles' two
UNESCO World Heritage sites-the Vallée de Mai Nature
Reserve. This natural palm forest, preserved in almost its original
state, harbors coco de mer-producer of the largest seed in the
plant kingdom. The Seychelles' other UNESCO site, Aldabra
Atoll, is near the island of Assumption and home to the world's
largest population of giant tortoises.
OTHER ISLANDS
On the private island of Felicite is the Six Senses Zil Pasyon resort.
Even if you don't stay here, guided trips from other islands can
include snorkeling at Félicité, where efforts are being made to
rehabilitate coral reefs. The island of Fregate is quite exclusive,
with its 17 pool-fronted bungalows and private peninsula, while
Desroches, one of the coral islands, is home to a Four Seasons
resort and garners acclaim for its diving, thanks to the abundant
